Experience the traditional sport of dragonboat racing with one of the most successful clubs in Hong Kong
“The club has won medals at the Club Crew World Championships.”
In previous years, the club has won medals at the Club Crew World Championships, been crowned champions at the International Dragon Boat Races and have won a number of local races in Hong Kong. This is made possible by honing our paddling technique in outrigger canoes year-round, and is a key component of our training regime, even during dragonboat season.
Dragon boat paddling originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. Dragon boats used for racing are long and narrow, with usually 20 paddlers seated in 10 rows of two. For racing events, dragon boats are rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails, and are required to carry a large drum aboard. Dragon boat races are traditionally held to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, making dragon boating the only sport to be celebrated as a national holiday. The Lunar calendar date is 5/5, which usually corresponds to a date in June.
Our dragonboat racing program includes races in the twenty person boats throughout the traditional dragonboat season. After the Dragonboat festival, the club also participates in a number of smallboat races run by the local communities.
